3 Tips to Choosing Real Honey

LET’S TALK HONEY! When shopping for honey, the options can be exhausting. Large containers, colored jars, bear-shaped bottles, local, organic, pure, raw, filtered, unfiltered, dark, light and so much more. Whew! I feel like I did my morning workout just thinking about it.

So how do you know which option to choose?

To help navigate this decision process, here are our “Top Three” tips for choosing real with honey:

Tip #1: Choose Raw. This is essential.

Many of us reach for a honey that resembles what you’d expect – light in color, clear and easy to squeeze from the container. This type of honey is often heated at high temperatures (pasteurized) to create a quick-flowing product. While this may sound exciting, it damages the honey. During the pasteurization process, high temperatures destroy the natural benefits of honey.

Raw honey is just the opposite. Raw honey has not been tampered with, heated or processed. The National Honey Board defines raw honey as honey that “exists in the beehive or as obtained by extraction.” In other words, it is honey the way bees made it. At Nate’s, we never heat our honey to the point of pasteurization. We simply warm the natural honey to keep it in its smooth, liquid state.

Tip #2: Choose Unfiltered.

During the pasteurization process, honey is often filtered, removing the natural goodies. When you choose unfiltered, you know that the natural parts of honey have stuck around. At Nate’s, after we gently warm our honey, we lightly strain out unneeded bee parts and wax before it slips into our bottles. The result is our delicious amber-colored raw & unfiltered honey. We also test for pesticides, antibiotics and corn or rice adulteration to keep your honey as natural as can be.

Choosing both Raw & Unfiltered is essential! And at Nate’s, we provide you with just that.

The orange label is a commitment to excellence that you are receiving the highest quality honey possible. When you choose orange, you choose much more than just a label.
